Biography

Although the son of a factory manager, Jørgen Jensen pursued a military career. He joined the army in 1896 and was commissioned as an officer three years later. Jensen graduated from the military college in 1907 and later attended the Central Gymnastics School in 1909. He was promoted to captain in 1914, major in 1929, and colonel in 1934, the rank at which he commanded the Opland Dragoon Regiment from 1934 to 1943 and served as chief adjutant to King Haakon VII from 1936 to 1939. During the German invasion of Norway in 1940, he took part in the battles in Hedmark.

Jensen placed in the lower part of the table in the individual jumping event at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm. He served as president of the Norwegian National Sports Association, the predecessor of the Norwegian Olympic Committee from 1930-32, and as chairman of the Norwegian Equestrian Association from 1936-40.

From 1913-26, Jensen also managed the military estate Østberg in Ringsaker, where he was also a member of the district council. After World War II, Jensen worked for 10 years in the Norwegian Armed Forces’ War History Department. In this capacity, he wrote books and articles about the war in Norway. Jensen was appointed Knight of the Swedish Order of the Sword and the Danish Order of the Dannebrog. In 1902, he married Inger Anna Maria Lereim in Kristiania (now Oslo), and they had five daughters.
