Charles was the 5th Baron Marion, coming from a family of military officers. He was appointed general in 1942 and served as a prefect for the French Vichy government. After liberation during World War II he was imprisoned in 1944. While awaiting trial he was kidnapped and executed by fighters of the French resistance group FTP as a representative of the hated Vichy regime. Marion won both his individual silver medals in the dressage in 1928 and in 1932 with his horse Linon and in 1932 was a member of the victorious French team after placing fourth in 1928.
