Biography
Aboard Durlas Eile, Barry Sonshine represented Canada in equestrian’s three-day eventing at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. With Robin Hahn, Alan Ehrlick and Norman Elder, Sonshine had a top-10 finish in the team event. Durlas Eile, one of Irelands’ greatest horses who took his name from his place of birth, was sold for a world record market price to Sonshine for the price of £19,000.
A graduate of the University of Toronto, Sonshine was an executive vice president and chairman with the diversified steel pipe company Welded Tube of Canada, a company founded by his father Joseph in 1970. Barry was married to Paula and had four children (Ian, Michelle, Lisa, Karen). In 2018, he was diagnosed with frontal lobe dementia, passing in 2020 at the age of 72.
