Cyclist Yury Dmitriyev was called up to the Soviet national team in 1966, riding in multiple races around the world, including finishing fourth at the 1967 Tour of Mexico. The following year Dmitriyev became the national champion in the team time trial, in addition to finishing third in the individual time trial. This earned him a place on the Olympic team for the Mexico City Games, where he finished 32nd in the road race and ninth in the team time trial. Dmitriyev then rode in three editions of the Peace Race, as well as the Tour of Yugoslavia and the Tour of Algeria.
