During the 1960s Uruguayan cyclist Rubén Etchebarne had some high profile results, in addition to competing at two Olympic Games. Etchebarne made his début at the Olympics in 1960 in Roma, participating in both the individual road race and the 4,000 metres team pursuit on the track. Two years later he enjoyed success back home when he won the 1962 edition of the Vuelta del Uruguay, winning two stages of the race along the way. That same year he also won bronze in the team time trial at the UCI Road World Championships in Italy. Etchebarne had further international success in 1963 when he and compatriots Alberto Velázquez, Luis Serra, and Juan José Timón won gold in the 4,000 metres team pursuit at the Pan American Games in São Paulo. Etchebarne returned to the Olympics for the 1964 Games in Tokyo, riding in the individual and team pursuit events on the track. He continued to win stages at the Vuelta del Uruguay before retiring in the early 1970s.
