Biography

Raimo Honkanen was a Finnish cyclist who competed from the late 1950s until the early 1970s. Honkanen represented Finland at World Track Cycling Championships in 1956, 1959, and 1961, and was the Nordic champion in the youth category at the end of the 1950s. In 1960 he finished second to Unto Hautalahti at the national road race championships, with both riders earning a place on the Olympic team. At the Roma Games he competed in both the road race and the 100 kilometres team time trial, finishing 20th in the latter.

Honkanen continued to have good results during the decade, winning 18 national road and track titles including victory in the team time trial (1963–66), the individual pursuit (1961–63, 1965), and the team pursuit (1961–67). In 1968 he once again competed at the Olympics, this time coming 19th in the team time trial in Mexico City. Honkanen also won two editions of the Porvoon one-day race (1964, 1966) and rode in multiple editions of the Peace Race.
