Martin Sæterhaug competed in the road time trial at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm. He did not finish the race and retired in Läggesta, after approximately 70 km. Norway was not counted for the team event, as only three of the required four members finished the race.
His favourite sport, however, was speed skating. His family produced top-level speed skaters over two generations. Sæterhaug was Norwegian champion in 1908 and 1914 and placed second or third nine times. At the All-round World Championships, he won silver in 1908 (behind fellow countryman Oscar Mathisen) and 1911 (behind Russia’s Nikolay Strunnikov) and bronze in 1910 (behind Mathisen and Strunnikov). In addition, he placed fourth in 1912 and fifth in 1909. At the European Championships, he won bronze in 1912, placed fourth twice (1908, 1911), and fifth in 1910.
Sæterhaug first worked as a carpenter and later in a cycle factory or workshop. After 1920, he owned his own sporting goods business in Trondhjem. He married Margit Gurine Hovin in 1905. They had two sons and one daughter. Before his marriage, he had one son with Ulrikka Kristine Helmersdatter. Martin’s brother Johan competed in the 1920 Olympic Games in boxing.
