Franz Wimmer was an Austrian cyclist who participated in the 1952 Helsinki and 1956 Melbourne Olympics. At Melbourne, he was also the Austrian flagbearer in the opening ceremony. Wimmer competed in the road races on both occasions and finished 30th in 1956. The Austrian team was unplaced at both Games as not all their riders finished the respective races. With the 4,000 metres pursuit track team, Wimmer failed to advance to the second round at either Olympics.
In 1954, Wimmer set three track world records in one-hour races at Paris, which were the first Austrian cycling world records ever. In 1951 and 1952 he won the national individual pursuit titles and in 1956 he won national titles in tandem and team pursuit. By profession, Wimmer was a butcher in his family’s business.
