Biography

Martín Jaite was an Argentine tennis player who played professionally from 1983 to 1993. Jaite achieved a career-best singles ranking of 10 in the world in July 1990, and a doubles ranking of 59 in the world in May 1985. A clay court specialist, Jaite earned almost $2 million in prize money during his career.

Jaite had a successful start to his career, winning his first ATP singles and doubles titles at the 1985 Argentina Open. In the singles he beat Diego Pérez of Uruguay in straight sets and in the doubles he and Christian Miniussi beat Pérez and Eduardo Bengoechea also in straight sets. The doubles victory was his one and only ATP title but he went on to win 11 more ATP singles titles, all of them on clay. His best performance in singles at a Grand Slam came at the 1985 French Open where he reached the quarter-finals where he lost to Ivan Lendl. Three years later Jaite competed in the singles and doubles at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. In the singles he reached the quarter-finals before losing to Brad Gilbert, while in the doubles he and Javier Frana were eliminated in the first round. After his playing career Jaite became the tournament director for ATP Buenos Aires, captained Argentina’s Davis Cup team, and was the coach of David Nalbandian.
