Biography

In her youth, Yelena Guts was a Soviet national champion in gymnastics and was selected to represent her country at the 1952 Helsinki Games, albeit as an alternate who did not compete after being replaced by Pelageya Danilova. In 1960, after her retirement from active competition, a chance encounter replacing an announcer for FC Dynamo Kiev led to a lifelong career. For over half of a century, she announced at home games for the club, becoming one of the most popular announcers in the Soviet Union and, later, Ukraine. She retired after the 2010/11 season, but remained a much-revered figure in the sporting world.
