A team portable apparatus event was only held at the Olympics in 1952 and 1956, although it somewhat resembled a team rhythmic gymnastics event. It had not been contested at the 1950 World Championships so choosing a favorite was difficult. Sweden won the gold medal, followed by the Soviet Union and Hungary taking bronze. In 1956 Hungary would move up and win the gold medal with Sweden winning silver, and the Soviets tying Poland for the bronze medal.
