Biography

Edit Weckinger-Perényi began her gymnastics career prior to World War II, but reached her peak after the conclusion of the conflict. She won her first national title in 1943 in all-around and followed that up with her first of four national titles in pommel horse in 1947, with her others coming in 1949, 1951, and 1952. She was selected to represent Hungary in the team all-around at the 1948 Summer Olympics, where she won a silver medal alongside Mária Kövi-Zalai, Irén Karcsics-Daruházi, Erzsébet Gulyás-Köteles, Erzsébet Balázs, Olga Tass-Lemhényi, Anna Fehér, and Margit Nagy-Sándor. She repeated this feat at the 1952 Summer Olympics, this time with Tass-Lemhényi, Gulyás-Köteles, Kövi-Zalai, Karcsics-Daruházi, Margit Korondi, Ágnes Keleti, and Andrea Bodó-Molnár, and also took home bronze in the team portable apparatus with the same women. Individually, her best finish at these Games was sixth in the uneven bars.

Weckinger-Perényi’s last major competition was the 1954 World Championships, where she won silver in the team all-around alongside Karcsics-Daruházi, Gulyás-Köteles, Keleti, Tass-Lemhényi, Aliz Kertész, and the non-Olympians Eva Banati and Ilona Bánhegyi Milanovits. She also just missed out on two other medals by placing fourth in the individual all-around and the balance beam. She retired from active competition shortly thereafter due to the cumulative impact of her injuries and soon began working as a gymnastics coach, although she maintained a second career as a bookkeeper.
