Biography

Margit Korondi was the daughter of a sports teacher and gymnastics coach. At the 1952 Olympics she won six medals including the gold medal on uneven bars, adding a silver in team all-around, and bronzes in balance beam, floor exercise, team portable apparatus, and the individual all-around. She missed the 1954 World Championships and was about to retire. But she returned to the 1956 Olympics where she won two more medals. After the Melbourne Games she did not return to Hungary and emigrated to the United States. Korondi married the Olympic boxer Mátyás Plachy and settled in Houston, but the couple was soon divorced. In 1964 she married the former water polo player János Szalay and settled in Los Angeles, and later in Henderson, Nevada.
