This was the début for a women’s individual all-around event at the Olympics and it was won by Soviet Ukrainian Mariya Horokovska, followed by her teammate Nina Bocharova in second, with Hungarian Margit Korondi taking bronze. There were seven women’s gymnastics events in Helsinki, and Horokovska won a medal in all of them, with two golds and five silver medals. Through 2014 she remains the only woman to have won seven medals at a single Olympic Games. Further her five silver medals remains, through 2014, the most silver medals won by any athlete, male or female, at one Olympics.
