Biography

Raili Tuominen (later Hämäläinen) took up gymnastics in 1948 and was one of the best Finnish female gymnasts of the 1950s. During her career, which lasted until 1960, Tuominen-Hämäläinen competed at the 1952 and 1960 Olympics and the 1954 World Championships, her best individual finish at those competitions a 20th place on balance beam at the 1952 Olympics. She also won eight individual Finnish titles between 1951 and 1953 and won team all-around and floor exercise silvers at the 1959 Nordic Championships.

Tuominen-Hämäläinen finished her sporting career after the 1960 Olympics and from 1960-92 worked as an international gymnastics judge, officiating at seven World Championship and eight European Championship tournaments. Beginning in 1989, Tuominen-Hämäläinen has been a member of the European Union of Gymnastics Technical Committee. Since 1996 she also worked as a trainer of international gymnastics judges and from 1996-2005 was a member of the Working Group for Euroteam, an European club team event in general gymnastics. She also worked out all the draws of the TeamGym Code of Point and wrote and translated into Finnish numerous textbooks about gymnastics. Tuominen-Hämäläinen was also a board member of the Finnish Gymnastics Federation and Tampereen Voimistelijat and received the Grand Cross of Merit of Finnish Sports in 1996, the Finnish Pro Urheilu Sports Award in 2009, and the European Union of Gymnastics silver medal in 1996.
