Dan Cantillon

Dan Cantillon fenced at the University of Detroit, making All-American in 1966-67. In 1966 he was named College Fencer of the Year. Cantillon fenced at the 1971 Pan American Games, winning a gold medal in team foil. He was 1974 US Champion in épée. After graduation in 1967, Cantillon served in the Army from 1968-69, serving in Vietnam as a 1st Lieutenant. Stationed at Ft. Sam Houston, he trained with the modern pentathlon team for the Olympic trials, where he finished third to make the 1968 Olympic team.

Cantillon later coached fencing at the University of Detroit, where his athletic director was Dick Vitale. He worked mostly for EDS (Electronic Data Systems), and then Hewlett-Packard as a consultant, before retiring in 2011, with his major customers the State of Ohio and Delphi Automotive. Cantillon is a member of the University of Detroit Titans Hall of Fame. His son, Daniel III, fenced at Michigan State, was a captain and MVP of the team, and eventually became a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic.
