Biography

Defender Wilhelm Canword’s first major tournament was the 1953 CCCF (Confederación Centroamericana y del Caribe de Fútbol) Championship in Costa Rica, and two years later he collected a silver medal when they clinched second place with a 2-0 win in their final match against Cuba. Also in 1955, Canword won a bronze medal with the Curaçao team at the Pan American Games, despite only four teams competing. It was the only time Curaçao entered the Pan-Am Games. He played against Costa Rica in a qualifying match for the 1958 FIFA World Cup and also in the 1957 CCCF Championship, and played in two matches in the 1959 Central American and Caribbean Games, and scored a hat-trick in Curaçao’s record 15-0 win over Puerto Rico. Canword played the last of his 22 internationals in a qualifying game for the 1960 Rome Olympics on 25 October 1959, but failed to add to his tally of six goals. During 1988 he served as manager of the Curaçao national team for a four month period, and in his seven games in charge, including four qualifiers for the 1990 World Cup, he won two, drew two and lost three matches.
