Biography

Nicolás Lapentti was an Ecuadorian tennis player who played professionally from 1995 to 2001. Lapentti achieved a career-best singles ranking of six in the world in April 2000, and a doubles ranking of 32 in the world in May 1999. He earned more than $6.3 million in prize money during his career.

As a junior player Lapentti won the 1994 Orange Bowl tournament in Florida. The same year he won the junior doubles titles at the French Open and the US Open, partnering Guga Kuerten and Ben Ellwood, respectively. After turning professional in 1995 he won his first ATP singles title with victory at the Bogotá Open against Miguel Tobón.

Lapentti reached the singles semi-finals at the 1999 Australian Open where he lost to Thomas Enqvist. From 1993 to 2010 he was part of Ecuador’s Davis Cup team. He competed in the singles at three Olympic Games; 1996 Atlanta, 2004 Athína, and 2008 Beijing, but never advanced past the first round.
