Winger Joe Kendrick played in the historic first Republic of Ireland (then the Irish Free State) international football match against Bulgaria at the Paris Olympics on 28 May 1924. Unfortunately, his place was taken by Frank Ghent for the 2-1 extra-time defeat by Netherlands in the quarter-final.
Kendrick played for Brooklyn FC of Dublin before a transfer to the English club Everton in 1926. He never played senior first team football for Everton and returned to Ireland in 1928 to join Shelbourne. He helped them win the League title in 1928/29 before a move the following season to Bray Unknowns. A further move to the Dublin-based Dolphin FC in 1932 resulted in him winning a further FAI League title (and Dublin City Cup) in 1935. Through 2025 it remains Dolphin’s only League title. Between 1924-35 Kendrick won three Republic of Ireland international caps, one of them being in the Republic’s first ever FIFA World Cup match, a qualifier against Belgium in 1934.
