Biography

Andrey Cherkasov was a Russian tennis player who played professionally from 1988 to 2000. Cherkasov achieved a career-best singles ranking of 13 in the world in June 1991.

Cherkasov began his career as an outstanding junior player, being ranked as the world number 3 in 1987. He turned professional the following year, and won his first major title at the 1989 Porto Challenger in Portugal, beating Javier Sánchez. Cherkasov won two ATP finals, both at the Kremlin Cup in 1990 and 1991.

At Grand Slam events Cherkasov had mixed fortunes. At six editions of Wimbledon from 1989–94 he never advanced past the first round. By contrast, at the other three Grand Slams Cherkasov reached the quarter-finals in all of them on his first and only appearance at each one.

Cherkasov competed at two Olympic Games, the first representing the Soviet Union, and then the Unified Team. At the 1988 Seoul Olympics, Cherkasov reached the second round before losing to Brad Gilbert of the United States. Four years later he competed at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics where he won the bronze medal.

Cherkasov retired from the sport in 2000, earning more than £2 million in prize money during his career.
