Maggie Bell was 16-years-old when her PE teacher spotted and recognised her talent for gymnastics. Bell then joined the Bexley Gym Club in London where she won a national gymnastics competition. By 1962 she had been selected as part of the national squad, with her competing at her first international event for Great Britain the following November. That same year she competed at her first British Championships, finishing eighth. After coming second in 1965 Bell won her first of five British titles in 1966. She became a mainstay on the British gymnastics team from 1963 until her retirement, competing at multiple World and European Championships, and the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Bell later moved to Australia, living there until her death in April 2024.
