The format was the same as in 1964, with the best six gymnasts in the individual all-around advancing to the apparatus final, with the final apparatus score made up of 50% of the all-around total and a final optional program. Věra Čáslavská was the defending gold medalist from Tokyo and had won this event at the 1966 World Championships. She defended her gold medal in Mexico City, with East German Erika Zuchold placing second and Soviet Zinaida Voronina winning bronze. Čáslavská had the highest score in qualifying and the final round to win easily. Zuchold had also won silver in the vault at the 1966 Worlds and would win the silver medal again in 1972 at München.
Top six on horse vault in team all-around advance to apparatus final. 50% of qualifying score added to optional exercise done in finals.
