Biography

Welsh international gymnast John Mulhall was a junior Welsh, and British, champion. He never won the senior Welsh title but was runner-up in 1960 and went to the Rome Olympics that same year. Mulhall enjoyed his best finish in the British National Championships in 1961 when he placed third behind fellow Rome Olympians Nik Stuart and Jack Pancott. Mulhall and Pancott were both selected for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, and were joined by Denise Goddard and Monica Rutherford in Great Britain’s squad of four. Remarkably, of the four, Mulhall and Goddard were both born in Cardiff.

In addition to his Olympic appearances, Mulhall represented Great Britain on several occasions including the match against the USA at the Empire Pool in 1965. He later became a gymnastics judge, and was also coach to the Welsh national team.
