The West German men’s gymnastics team placed eighth at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics in the team all-around event. Team member Heinz Häussler came in 45th in the individual all-around. His best result on the apparatus events was a 16th place on pommelled horse. Four years later in München, Häussler again was a team member, now finishing fifth, while individually he finished 52nd. Pommelled horse was his best event, winning four consecutive West German championships in this event from 1968-71.

Häussler started a second sports career as a windsurfer and participated in several international competitions. At the age of 69 he won the World Championship in his senior class.
