Japan’s Akinori Nakayama had won this event at the 1966 World Championships and he led after all-around qualifying, tied with Soviet Mikhail Voronin. They also posted the best score in the final round to tie for the gold medal, with bronze going to Nakayama’s teammate Eizo Kenmotsu.
