Biography

Kanati Allen competed in gymnastics for the United States at the 1968 Olympics. Prior to becoming an Olympian, Allen, who was 5/8 Cherokee, made the 1966 world team. He attended UCLA, coached by Art Shurlock, where he majored in physics, and placed third in all-around at the 1967 NCAA championships. He later earned a Ph.D. in physics from the U. of Washington. Later in life he had multiple health problems and fell on hard times, but he never lost his love of science.
