In the pool Spain’s Juan Fortuny had a successful career as both a swimmer and a water polo player before continuing his success as a coach. Fortuny was a prolific swimmer who won 46 national titles, in addition setting 57 Spanish records from 1962 to 1968. At the 1967 Mediterranean Games he won three medals, with gold in the 400 metres freestyle and the 4 x 100 metres freestyle, and bronze in the 100 metres freestyle. Fortuny also swam at the Olympic Games in Tokyo (1964) and Mexico City (1968).
In 1968 Fortuny agreed to an offer made by Bandy Zolyomy to join the Spanish water polo team. Over the next three years he represented the team in 37 international matches. By 1971 Fortuny had become a swimming coach and trained Rafael Escalas. He continued in his role as a coach for many years, working with many greats of Spanish swimming including Erika Villaécija, Rafa Muñoz, and María Peláez.
