Biography

Harry Svendsen’s Olympic career ended after competing in the heat of the 100 metres backstroke at Stockholm in 1912. Domestically, he was overshadowed by the dominant John Johnsen. Svendsen, under the name Aspestrand from 1913, won nine silver medals at Norwegian championships from 1911-15, two each in the 100 and 1,000 metres freestyle, four in the 400 free, and one in the 100 metres backstroke. In all these nine events he placed second behind Johnsen. As Harry Aspestrand he published a book about swimming in 1924.
