Biography

John Johnsen was entered in five individual events at the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm but did not start in the 200 m breaststroke, and was eliminated in three events in the first-round heats. His best result was in the 400 metres freestyle, where he advanced to the semi-final.

Domestically, Johnsen won 32 individual Norwegian championships between 1911-22. He won 22 in freestyle, seven in backstroke, and one each in breaststroke, underwater swimming, and diving. Johnsen also won ten silver and three bronze medals. In the five years 1912-13, 1915-16, and 1918 he was awarded the King’s Cup for the best competitor at the national championships (the championship was not contested in 1914). Johnsen also won a Norwegian water polo championship.
