Fernando Cañales won silver in the 100 metres freestyle at the 1979 and 1983 Pan American Games. In 1979 he was also a member of the bronze medal winning 4×100 metres medley team (with Carlos Berrocal, Orlando Catinchi, and Arnaldo Pérez).
