Mihai Mandache was a competitive backstroke swimmer who represented Romania at international competitions during the early 1980s. In 1980 Mandache swam in both the 100 and 200 metres backstroke at the Moskva Olympics, placing 22nd and 18th, respectively. One year later he competed in the same events at the Summer Universiade in București, finishing seventh in the final of the 200 metres. He later moved to New Zealand, where he worked as a swimming coach in Auckland.
