Biography

Tibor Mezőfi started playing basketball for the MOVE TE team, then played for BSE, MÁVAG and its successor, Vasas-MÁVAG. Mezőfi won his only Hungarian championship title in 1948, but also finished second and third with his teams three times.

Between 1946 and 1956 Mezőfi played 67 times for the Hungarian national team. He achieved his first success at the 1946 European Championship in Geneva, where the team won bronze. He participated in the 1948 London Olympics, and was also part of the team that won the World College Championship in Budapest in 1949, and was a member of the team that won the silver medal at the 1953 European Championship in Moscow. In 1954 he once again won first place at the World College Championship in Budapest. The pinnacle of his career was the gold medal he won at the 1955 European Championships in Budapest.

After finishing his sports career Mezőfi worked for twenty years in the technical department of MÁVAG. Later, after earning a degree in agricultural engineering, he worked as a winemaker. In his free time he was a passionate opera lover and sang at an amateur level.
