Biography

Carolyn Wood represented the Multnomah AC in her home town of Portland. She competed in four events at the 1960 Olympics, when still only 14 years old. In the 100m freestyle she placed fourth, but in the 100m butterfly final she was forced to give up when she swallowed water near the turn. She swam in the medley relay though only in the heats, but in the freestyle relay she won a well-deserved gold medal. Wood later taught English in Portland, and lived in her long-time family home well into her 70s.
