Robert Foster attended Mercersburg Academy, graduating from the prep school in 1909. He was the first Mercersburg student to compete at the Olympics and he did so before graduating from high school. He also swam for the Illinois Athletic Club. Foster later worked for the Colgate Palmolive Company.
