Biography

Maiola Kalili was a Hawai’ian who swam for the Los Angeles AC. Along with his brother Manuella Kalili, he got his start swimming in Honolulu harbor where they would dive for coins.He was 1931 AAU champion outdoors in the 100 yards and in 1932 scored a notable double by taking the 100 yard and 220 yard AAU freestyle titles indoors. Kalili swam on the 4x200 freestyle relay team at the 1932 Olympics alongside his brother, Manuella. Maiola retired from competition in 1933 and later appeared in some movies as a South Sea native and Navy messmen in war films. Kalili was later inducted into the Hawai’i Sports Hall of Fame.
