Biography

During the 1970s and 1980s Mercedes Pomares played for the Cuban national volleyball team and won multiple medals at international tournaments. Cuba excelled in the sport at the Pan American Games, which saw Pomares win four gold medals (1971, 1975, 1979, 1983). She enjoyed similar success at the Central American and Caribbean Games, winning three golds (1974, 1978, 1982), but undoubtably the team’s finest hour was winning the 1978 World Championships in the Soviet Union with victory over Japan. One year earlier she also won silver at the 1977 FIVB World Cup in Japan. Pomares was also part of the Cuban team that competed at the Olympics in 1972, 1976, and 1980, where they had a best finish of fifth-place in Montréal and Moskva.
