At the age of 17, whilst in his second year of high school, Jang Yun-Chang was selected to represent the South Korean national volleyball team. That year Jang helped South Korea to reach the semi-finals of the 1978 World Championships in Roma and to win gold at the Asian Games in Bangkok. Further medals at the Asian Games followed with bronze in 1982, and silver in both 1986 and 1990. Jang also competed at two Olympic Games, finishing fifth in 1984 in Los Angeles and 11th four years later in Seoul. On the domestic front he was a founding member of the Korea Securities professional volleyball team in 1983, helping his team to win five league championship titles and twice being named as their MVP.
Following his retirement from the sport Jang served as a professor in the department of physical education at Kyonggi University. As a sports administrator he was also a technical director for the Korea Volleyball Association, President of the Korea National Sports Team, and served as a committee member of the Korea Volleyball Federation.
