Australian middle-heavyweight weightlifter Manny Santos won his first national title in 1953 when he became the junior champion. Three years later Santos won silver at the Australian championships to earn himself a place on the Olympic team. At the Melbourne Games he lifted a total of 385.0 kg to tie for ninth with Syd Harrington of Great Britain. He then went on to find the form of his life, winning gold at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff, along with four consecutive national titles from 1958 to 1961. Santos competed at the 1960 Roma Olympics and the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Australia, finishing fourth at the latter.
