Biography

In the 30 years after the end of World War II, British success in freestyle wrestling was limited to the successes of Ken Richmond and the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games gold medal win of Tony Buck. Unfortunately, Buck could not repeat this success at the higher World level and his Olympic appearance in 1964 only resulted in two defeats and a quick elimination from the Games.

At domestic level he was six times national champion, divided equally between light-heavyweight and heavyweight, between 1957 and 1965 and represented Great Britain at the 1962 and 1965 World Championship.Having previously worked as a labourer, Tony got a job in the early 60s as a doorman at the Cavern Club, Liverpool during the time the Beatles would begin their rise to fame by playing at the venue. “I would be on the door at lunchtime and during the evenings and train the rest of the time.” he said.
