Biography

Although William Ruff competed at the 1908 and 1912 Olympics in the Greco-Roman style of wrestling, he was also a fine exponent of the catch-as-catch-can style (now known as freestyle wrestling), and the Cumberland and Westmorland variety of the sport.

Ruff was a member of the London Amateur Wrestling Society (LAWS) and Lloyds United Sports Club (LUSC), of which he subsequently became honorary secretary. In 1913 he reached the lightweight final at a joint meeting organised by the LAWS and LUSC, only to lose the final to V. Behnsen of the Hammersmith AWC. Ruff claimed the Surrey Amateur title shortly afterwards, however, by beating D. Spencer of Olympic AWC.
