Yachtsman Adrian Jardine was one of five ex-Millfield school pupils at the 1964 Olympics. The others were athlete Mary Rand, high jumper Gordon Miller, three-day eventer Michael Bullen, and the Italian marathon runner Giorgio Jegher. Jardine´s own twin brother Stuart was nearly the sixth ex-Millfield student at the Games but just missed out on selection for the Flying Dutchman class after leading the trials for most of the series before losing out to Keith Musto and Tony Morgan, the eventual silver medallists. At the Tokyo Games, Adrian finished 11th in the 5.5 metres open class but four years later won bronze in the same event. Stuart also went to the 1968 Mexico Olympics, but he failed to medal in the Star class.
After winning the 1959 National Flying Dutchman Championship, Adrian finished second with Angus Fryer in the 1959 World Championships. Adrian was third in 1962 with James Ramus (Stuart Jardine´s partner at the 1968 and 1972 Olympics). Adrian Jardine and Fryer also won bronze at the 1959 Europeans.
Racing for more than 50 years, Jardine was still sailing competitively beyond his 79th birthday. The Jardine twins were the sons of a former Army colonel and were educated at Sherbourne School before attending the Sandhurst Military College from where they passed out in 1954 into commissions in the Royal Engineers. The siblings regularly sailed together and in 1956 won the National 12ft Dinghy Championship.
