Biography

Playing as a shooting guard and small forward, Latvian Juris Kalniņš was on the Soviet national team from 1962-64. He won silver at the 1964 Olympics, bronze at the 1963 World Championships, and a European title in 1963. On a club level, Kalniņš started with Spartak Rīga from 1955-59. In 1965 he played with VEF Riga and from 1960-64 and 1966-70 he was with ASK Rīga. He was on the Soviet champions in 1956, and won silver at the 1962 and 1964, and bronzes at the 1959 and 1963 Soviet championships. Kalniņš also won a FIBA European Champions Cup (now re-branded as EuroLeague) in 1958-60 and was runner up in 1961. After finishing his sporting career, Kalniņš ran a coffee shop in Rīga and also remained active in basketball circles, winning gold with the Latvian team at the 1997 World Veteran Championships in the M55+ category.
