Biography

Albert Rowland was one of the first three New Zealanders to compete at an Olympic Games when they formed part of an Australasian team in 1908. Rowland was a jeweler and optician working in London at the time of the games. He had previously won the New Zealand one- and three-mile walk titles in 1906-07. Rowland later established the Wellington Scottish Athletic Club in 1915.

A second lieutenant in the New Zealand Rifle Brigade during World War I, he was on temporary attachment to the New Zealand Cyclist Corps when he was killed by machine gun fire during an assault on the village of Marfaux, near Reims, in the Second Battle of the Marne, on 23 July 1918.
