Álvaro Ribeiro

Álvaro Ribeiro was the first top Brazilian sprinter. Brazilian national championships only began in 1925 but Ribeiro won the 100, 200, and 400 in 1925 and won the 200 and 400 in 1927. He would set national records at all three distances. Ribeiro started out as a long jump prospect and in 1922 won the 100, 200, 400, long jump, and anchored two winning relays in the São Paulo State Meet. He would dominate that meet for the next five years.

Ribeiro became a medical doctor in 1926 and quit competing in 1928. But he practiced medicine for only a short time as he was deeply religious and entered the Benedictine Order and became a monk.
