Biography

Long jumper Maureen Barton won the 1964 WAAA junior title when she won the first of six consecutive Surrey titles in 1964. After finishing second to Sheila Sherwood in the 1967 WAAAs, PE student Barton made her international début against West Germany and was then selected for the Mexico Olympics, where she reached the long jump final and finished 12th, while Sherwood won silver. At the 1969 European Championships in Athens, Barton finished sixth, but a leg muscle injury saw her miss most of the 1970 season. During her lay-off she married decathlete Derek Chitty.

Barton-Chitty, as she then became known, returned the fitness and won the 1972 and 1974 WAAA indoor titles. She also went to her second Olympics at München (Munich) in 1972 but failed to reach the final, and at her only Commonwealth Games appearance, at Christchurch, New Zealand, in 1974, Barton-Chitty finished eighth. Her husband Derek (aged 56) was chosen to represent Great Britain at the 1999 World Triathlon Age Group Championships at Montréal.

Personal Best: LJ – 6.39 (1972).
