Cypriot sportsman Ioannis Talianos was a champion in track and field athletics in his country of birth before going on to represent Greece. At the Pancyprian Games Talianos was the champion in the high jump (1919, 1922, 1923) and the 110 metres hurdles (1922, 1923). In 1924 he travelled to Athína to compete in the Panhellenic Games where he won gold in the 110 metres hurdles and 400 metres hurdles, along with silver in the high jump. His excellent performances caught the eye of the Greek Olympic Committee who then included him in the Greek team for the 1924 Paris Olympics. In Paris Talianos ran in the two hurdles races but did not advance from the heat in either. He was also part of the Greek quartet that ran in the 4 × 100 metres relay, with the team reaching the semi-finals.
