Biography

Ruggero Maregatti was an Italian sprinter active between the two World Wars. His rivalry with Edgardo Toetti has remained famous, also seasoned with a local flavor as they were both from Milano, although Toetti had the best of their head-to-head match-ups, 40-13. Maregatti grew up in the Marelli of Sesto S. Giovanni, then competed with the G.S. Officine Meccaniche from 1925 to 1928, Ambrosiana from 1929-32, and for Pro Patria in 1933, all Milanese sports clubs.

Domestically Maregatti won six individual national titles: two in the 100m (1924-25) and four in the 200m (1924, 1929-31), adding six victories in the 4x100 relay between 1925 and 1933 with three different clubs. He set Italian records in the 100 metres (10.7, August 1926 and twice 10.6 in 1930-31) and 21.6 on 200m in October 1931, a mark improved a year later by Toetti. Internationally Maregatti was capped 16 times from 1926-32. He was chosen for three Olympics but started only in 1932 in the relay, helping Italy win the bronze medal in front of Canada.

Personal Best: 100 – 10.6 (1930).
