Biography

Michelle Freeman was a hurdler and sprinter who competed for Jamaica at the 1992, 1996, and 2000 Olympic Games. She ran in college in the United States at the University of Florida, winning the 1992 NCAA title in the 100 metre hurdles. Freeman won a bronze medal in the high hurdles at the 1997 World Championships, and also took bronze in the 4x100 relay at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. She was World Indoor Champion in the 60 metre hurdles in 1997, finishing second in 2001, and the 1994 Commonwealth Games Champion in the 100 metre hurdles.

Freeman later became a coach in the USA, first coaching at the University of Virginia, and later was an assistant coach at the University of Oklahoma. In December 2002 she was driving when she was involved in a car accident that resulted in the death of her mother, her good friend, the 1984 Olympian, Ilrey Oliver, and seriously injured Bev Kearney, then the coach at the University of Texas, but who had previously coached Freeman at Florida.

Personal Bests: 100 – 11.16 (1993); 100H – 12.52 (1997).
