In addition to being a police officer Otto Berg was one of the best all-round track and field athletes in Norway during the late 1920s and the early 1930s. Berg won his first medals at the Norwegian championships with silver in the triple jump in 1927 and silver in the 5,000 metres in 1929. After winning another silver in 1930, this time in the long jump, he then went on to win nine national titles, with gold in the long jump (1931, 1934–36), standing high jump (1935–36), standing long jump (1935–36), and 100 metres (1935). His consistent results resulted in him being awarded with the King’s Cup in 1935 and 1936.
At international competitions Berg won silver in the long jump at the 1934 European Athletics Championships in Torino. That same year he was bestowed with the Egebergs Ærespris award for his performances in gymnastics and track and field. Two years later he competed in the long jump at the 1936 Berlin Olympics where he tied for tenth place. Berg also had the honour of being the flagbearer for Norway at the Opening Ceremony.
