Aleksandrs Upmals had his first major international appearance at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. Like his four fellow countrymen he did not finish the marathon. At the Second All-Russian Olympics in Riga in 1914, which was also the Russian Championship that year, he won silver in the marathon behind Andrejs Kapmals.
After the outbreak of the World War I, he moved from Riga to Petrograd. In 1916, he won the Russian championship in the 10,000 m and won silver in the 5,000 m. In the same year, he won the St. Petersburg - Pavlovsk race, covering approximately the distance of a marathon.
Upmals was married to Martha Plume. He died in 1918 in Petrograd from cholera.
